The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, formed in 1984, focuses on educating others about a community often overlooked in Western cowboy culture, but integral to its formation: Black cowboys and cowgirls. Photographer Gabriela Hasbun has spent over a decade photographing this unique rodeo, capturing the exciting performances as well as the stories of those behind the camera. The New Black West is a collection of these photos and narratives and a celebration of a unique cultural event. Denesha Henderson, a subject in the book, joins Gabriela for the conversation.
