We’re thrilled to kick off our 2019 Reading Rock Stars program on January 25 by bringing ten celebrated children’s authors and illustrators to four Title I elementary schools in Houston, where we will give each student their very own autographed book, as well as a set of all books for the school library—a total of 1,892 books! Roda Ahmed is a Norwegian author and columnist born in Hargeisa, Somalia. Roda is the bestselling author of Forberedelsen (The Preparations). Mae Among the Stars is her first children’s book. Ana Aranda was born and raised in Mexico City, where she studied design. She now lives in San Francisco, where she obtained her MFA in Illustration. Ana’s work has been featured in galleries and museums in the United States, France, Mexico, and Italy. Her illustrations can be found in picture books published in France and Italy. Ana’s US debut picture book The Chupacabra Ate the Candelabra (written by Marc Tyler Nobleman, Nancy Paulsen Books/Penguin) was released March 2017. She is currently working on her second picture book and a picture book that she both writes and illustrates.

Diane Gonzales Bertrand is the author of numerous books for children. Ame Dyckman is short, loud, mischievous, and often dresses like her book characters. (SEE?!) She’s also the award-winning, internationally-translated author of the fantastically illustrated (THANKS, illustrators!) picture books BOY + BOT, TEA PARTY RULES, the New York Times bestselling WOLFIE THE BUNNY, HORRIBLE BEAR!, YOU DON’T WANT A UNICORN!, and more picture books and board books in the works! Ame lives in central New Jersey with her family, ridiculously big-eared cat, book collection, closet full of hair dye colors, and of course, the characters from her stories.

Vashti Harrison is an artist originally from Onley, Virginia. She has a background in cinematography and screenwriting and a love for storytelling. She earned her BA from the University of Virginia and her MFA from CalArts where she snuck into Animation classes to learn from Disney and Dreamworks legends. There she rekindled a love for drawing and painting. Now, utilizing both skill sets, she is passionate about crafting beautiful stories in both the film and kidlit worlds. Her Experimental films and videos focus on her Caribbean Heritage and folklore. They have shown around the world at film festivals and venues including the New York Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Obtuvo su licenciatura de la Universidad de Virginia y su MFA de CalArts, donde ingresó a las clases de animación para aprender de las leyendas de Disney y Dreamworks. Nicolás Kanellos is the Brown Foundation Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston and founder-director of Arte Público Press. The author of numerous books on U.S. Hispanic literature and theatre for adults, including Hispanic Immigrant Literature: El Sueño del Retorno (University of Texas Press, 2011), he practiced these tongue twisters while growing up in New York andPuerto Rico. He lives with his family in Houston, Texas.

James Luna is an elementary school teacher in Riverside, California. He is the author of a short, bilingual novel for intermediate readers, A Mummy in Her Backpack / Una momia en su mochila (Piñata Books, 2012), and two picture books, The Place Where You Live / El lugar donde vives (Piñata Books, 2015) and The Runaway Piggy / El cochinito fugitivo (Piñata Books, 2010), which was selected by Texas schoolchildren as their favorite book on the Tejas Star Reading List.

 

Jessica Mendoza is an ESPN baseball analyst and two-time Olympic medalist who teamed up with her sister Alana Mendoza Dusan in this sweet and hilarious middle-grade novel that celebrates teamwork, family, and softball!

Chitra Soundar is a closet clown, consummate liar, writer and storyteller. As a kid, she has danced in a Bollywood movie, acted on stage with her neighborhood friends and disliked math because it never added up. She juggles her writing new stories and promoting her current books, while holding down a day-job. Born in the coastal city Chennai, in India, she now lives in London. Chitra is an active supporter of reading for pleasure and inclusivity in publishing. Her Farmer Falgu picture book series has been translated and sold in over 6 countries.

She tells the story of her family’s immigration in Darkroom: A Memoir in Black & White (The University of Alabama Press, 2012). Cuarto oscuro: Recuerdos en blanco y negro is the Spanish edition. In July 2018, Candlewick Press will release Lila’s first children’s book, My Year in the Middle. Lila and her husband Paul have three grown children.
