Join Jamila Minnicks and Lakiesha Carr for a discussion of two stirring debut novels following Black women living in the American South. Moonrise Over New Jessup, set in 1957, tracks Alice Young as she moves to an all-Black town in rural Alabama and struggles to balance her love for this community she calls home with her undying support of her husband and the clandestine activist work that challenges the town’s status quo. An Autobiography of Skin explores the overlapping lives of three Black Texan women at different stages of life and the traumas that both figuratively and literally haunt them as the narrative unfolds.
