Whether you’re in a fantasy world or Disney’s Magic Kingdom, adapting to unfamiliar spaces can be challenging — especially as a young adult. Huda F Cares, shortlisted for the 2023 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, is a humorously grounded tale about a Muslim family’s trip to Disneyland and one girl’s struggles with fitting in and standing out by Houston-based author/illustrator Huda Fahmy. The Hills of Estrella Roja, a spooky and queer romp about two young women uncovering the creepy and mysterious secrets of a small Texas town, is the debut graphic novel by author/illustrator Ashley Robin Franklin. Join Huda Fahmy and Ashley Robin Franklin for a discussion of writing and illustrating YA graphic novels full of humor, new environments, and self-discovery.
