Three writers discuss the impact of their relationships with their mothers on their new work. In his new memoir How We Fight for Our Lives, Saeed Jones writes of coming of age as a gay black man in the South with a single mother and their tender, complicated relationship. In her new novel, Dominicana, Angie Cruz weaves a fictional story based heavily on her mother’s experience immigrating to New York City from the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. And in her new anthology What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About, inspired by her acclaimed essay, writer and critic Michele Filgate asks several writers to ruminate on their relationships with their mothers.
