These two new novels are set in borderlands both literal and figurative. Gabino Iglesias’s genre-spanning The Devil Takes You Home (a Harper’s Bazaar Best, Buzziest New Book of 2022) is the story of a reluctant hitman who must traverse the US–Mexico border for a final mission so dangerous it’s borderline suicidal. Rudy Ruiz’s Booklist-starred Valley of Shadows (“an engrossing blend of historical fiction, ghost story, and mystery,” Publishers Weekly) tells of Solitario Cisneros, a retired sheriff forced to pick up his gun as a series of grisly murders fall upon the border town of Olvido, Mexico, in the late nineteenth century.
