Abraham Verghese is a professor at the School of Medicine at Stanford University. He is also the author of New York Times bestselling novel Cutting for Stone (2010), as well as autobiographical books The Tennis Partner (2011), and My Own Story: A Doctor’s Story (1995). Verghese’s long-awaited new novel, The Covenant of Water, follows three generations of a family in Kerala from 1900 to 1977 as they seek answers to a strange secret: in every generation, at least one family member dies by drowning. Oprah Winfrey calls The Covenant of Water “One of the best books I’ve read in my entire life.” Join Verghese for a conversation on family, the progress of medicine, and the passing of time.
