In these moving, meaningful novels, compelling characters wrestle with intergenerational trauma and the complexities within their familial bonds. An Appetite for Miracles follows Danna Mendoza as her grandfather’s dementia progresses and her relationship with her mother grows increasingly strained; meanwhile, Raúl Santos’s mother is released from prison after spending two years there, and her memories and pain compound the pressure Raúl feels to pursue the life she wants for him. My Father the Panda Killer alternates between two timelines: Jane Vũ’s perspective as she prepares to leave her abusive father’s home and tells her younger brother about her father’s past, and her father Phúc’s memories as a thirteen-year-old fleeing Vietnam in 1975 during the war.
