For Texan rancher Frank Norfleet, all that mattered was revenge. After being swindled out of his money, Norfleet vowed to do whatever it took to out-con the conmen who took everything from him. Amy Reading’s The Mark Inside: A Perfect Swindle, a Cunning Revenge, and a Small History of the Big Con combines the gripping tale of a cruel deception in the 1920’s with a thrilling depiction of the con throughout history. The narrative spans most of Norfleet’s life, starting at the age of 49, when he arrived in Dallas with the intent to purchase land. After the double-cross, Norfleet fought back. He traveled across America, using a suitcase of disguises and some slick acting skills to aid him in finding the men who swindled him. Booklist calls The Mark Inside “riveting, exciting and eye-opening.” The Mark Inside is Reading’s first book, based on her dissertation on the American biography. She finished The Mark Inside after receiving her Ph.D. from Yale. Reading currently lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children.
