Bill Wittliff


Biography

Bill Wittliff is a distinguished photographer and writer whose photographs have been exhibited in the United States and abroad, and published not only in his two recent books with the University of Texas Press, Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy (2004) and La Vida Brinca: A Book of Tragaluz Photographs (2006), but also in numerous catalogs, books, and periodicals. Bill's third book with UT Press, A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove, is due in October, 2007. As a screenwriter and producer, his credits include The Perfect Storm, The Black Stallion, Legends of the Fall, and Lonesome Dove, among others.

A graduate of the University of Texas, Bill is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, a past board member of the Sundance Institute, a board member of the Austin Film Festival, and a member of the Texas Philosophical Society. Wittliff is also a past president and Fellow of the Texas Institute of Letters and a recipient of major awards for writing, filmmaking, and book design. A 2002 recipient of the Texas Book Festival's Bookend Award, Bill was recently honored with the Texas Medal of Arts and the TIL Lon Tinkle Award for Excellence Sustained Throughout a Career. He continues to work on photographic projects; is editor of the Wittliff Gallery Book Series with UT Press, and is currently completing a motion-picture script about Lieutenant General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers.

Bill and his wife Sally are cofounders of the highly regarded Encino Press, and of the Southwestern Writers Collection and the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography at Texas State University-San Marcos. They live in Austin.

Texas State houses Bill Wittliff’s major literary and photographic archives. Among the many images are those from his Vaquero, Tragaluz (pinhole), and Lonesome Dove series, as well as his famous author/artist series and the Boystown series (as conservator and printer). An exhibition of his Lonesome Dove photographs will be on display at the Gallery August 23, 2007, through March 30, 2008, on the seventh floor of the Alkek Library.
