 Andrew Porter
Winner of the prestigious Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, Andrew Porter's debut collection of short stories, The Theory of Light and Matter, reveals haunting glimpses into fragile marriages, familial tensions, and loyal friendships. The book opens with a young man's memory of his childhood friend's death in a manhole one summer. In the title story, a young college student is conflicted as she tries to sort out her feelings between her boyfriend and the professor with whom she has been having a secret but innocent affair. In each of his stories, Porter discloses the heartbreaking and complicated events that characterize seemingly ordinary people. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution describes Porter’s work as, “Luminous...A memorable debut that honors the history of the short story form while blazing a new trajectory all its own.” “A beautifully executed short story collection,” Texas Monthly says. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Porter has received numerous awards for his fiction; his writing has appeared in One Story, Epoch, The Threepenny Review, and on NPR’s "Selected Shorts." Porter teaches at Trinity University in San Antonio.
