Christian Lander at the 2009 Texas Book Festival

Christian Lander

Lander has built his book, Stuff White People Like: The Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions, on his popular blog. "An interesting fact about white people is that they firmly believe all of the world's problems can be solved through awareness,'" Lander says in the 18th of 150 entries in his book about the new generation of what were "yuppies" in the Eighties. "This belief allows them to feel sweet self-satisfaction without actually having to solve anything or face any difficult challenges." Some of the stuff white people like, according to Lander, includes books, multilingual children, and public transportation that is not a bus. Somehow, Lander points out, a sizeable section of the U.S. population has declared themselves non-conforming individualists, yet have managed to merge into a mass of indistinguishable clones, all adhering to a collective of standards thought to be cool. Beverages, food, interracial friendships, travel destinations, and forms of entertainment are all prescribed tastes necessary to determine "whiteness." Lander has included helpful flow charts to outline life trajectories that truly white people should take and a test at the end to measure how white you are. Lander is a PhD dropout who has lived in various parts of the U.S. and abroad and was the public speaking instructor of the year in 2006 at Indiana University. He lives in Los Angeles with his photographer wife.
