The history of Texas is full of characters: there are those who fought great battles, negotiated
historic treaties, and wrote the laws that brought this great state into being.
There are a host of writers, educators, astronauts, athletes, Texas Rangers, and
elected officials. And many of these Texas greats lie at rest in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. Even
some of our infamous rogues and scoundrels have a resting place on the grounds. Texas is the only state with a cemetery
dedicated to its heroes and public officials, and all of the State Cemetery's
honored dead helped make Texas what it is today. Texas State Cemetery (Book 16 in the Clifton and
Shirley Caldwell Texas Heritage Series) tells the stories of many noteworthy Texans who are buried
in this memorial ground's peaceful lawns and hillsides. Each chapter is
introduced by a prominent person who may someday come to rest in the Texas State Cemetery. There is an epilogue by Governor Rick Perry. Beautiful color photographs by Laurence Parent
and historical photos from Texas’ State
Archives commission offer an evocative visual tour of the Texas State Cemetery and its
monuments. Jason Walker works for the Texas State Cemetery. He is the
Director of Research and oversees educational programs, exhibits, and collection
and website management.
