Jennifer Ziegler at the 2008 Texas Book Festival

Jennifer Ziegler

Maggie Dempsey's hippie parents constantly move all over the country, never living in one city for more than a few months ("humans aren’t meant to stay in one place. If we were, we’d be plants," they say). The moves are fun and adventurous for a while, but now that Maggie is a teenager, giving up friends and a sense of belonging is getting old fast. Leaving Portland and abandoning her boyfriend was the final devastating straw. As she heads for Austin, determined to never feel such heartbreak again, she arms herself with a plan to avoid making friends at all costs (one of her tips: "Unpopularity is a state of mind. Feel nerdy. Think uncool thoughts. It also helps to use the word 'vaginal' a lot"). Of course, she finds that even the best laid plans can go ridiculously awry. Ziegler's second young adult novel, How NOT to be Popular, is a hilarious book that adds an ironic twist to the common tale of teenagers striving to fit in. Also the author of Alpha Dog, Ziegler lives with her family in Austin.
