Elizabeth Samet at the 2007 Texas Book Festival

Elizabeth Samet

Elizabeth Samet, in Soldier's Heart: Reading Literature through Peac and War at West Point, shares her experiences as a civilian teaching literature at a military academy. Samet, who arrived at West Point before September 11, 2001, analyzes the transformation as seen through her students and the sacrifices they have made. Samet also considers the role of women in the army, religious and political fanaticism infecting the country, and patriotism in her honest and original reflection on literature and morality. Samet's students share what books and movies mean to them - the poetry of Wallace Stevens, the fiction of Virginia Woolf, or the films of James Cagney. Soldier's Heart was originally an article that Samet wrote that spurred such significant attention that it deserved further publication. Elizabeth Samet has been an English professor at West Point for 10 years.
